Antonio Conte has leapt to the defence of Tiemoue Bakayoko following his mixed first season at Chelsea FC.

The French midfielder signed for the west London club from Monaco last summer but has struggled to produce consistent performances for the Blues.

Bakayoko has scored three goals and made three assists in all competitions for Conte’s men so far this season and he will be hoping to improve his form for Chelsea FC next term.

And Conte has insisted that he has been pleased by the impact Bakayoko has made at Stamford Bridge since his move from the Ligue 1 side last year.

Speaking at his pre-match news conference ahead of Wednesday’s clash with Huddersfield, Conte said: “If you remember well I always said that we are talking about a young player, only 23 years old and this is his first season in this country,’ he added, when asked about Bakayoko’s development.

“To arrive and adapt yourself quickly in this league is not simple. It’s not simple to go into our idea of football. He has the right characteristics to play for Chelsea.

“I trust in him and he played a good game against Liverpool. But I know him and for sure he has a lot of space for improvement.

“For this I am sure but we are talking about a young player with not great seasons on his back in the past, only one season with Monaco last season when he played often.”

Chelsea FC are still aiming to try and end the season on a high when they take on Manchester United in the FA Cup final at the end of the month.

The west London side are looking to go one step further than they did last season, when they were beaten by Arsenal in the final at Wembley back in May.

Chelsea FC are likely to be linked with a host of players in the coming weeks and months as the Blues look to strengthen their squad in the summer transfer window.
