Rio Ferdinand explains why Chelsea FC beat Man United
Rio Ferdinand has his say on Chelsea FC's win over Man United in the FA Cup final on Saturday
Rio Ferdinand blamed Manchester United’s lack of spike up front for their FA Cup final defeat by Chelsea FC on Saturday.
Chelsea FC beat the Red Devils to the trophy on Saturday thanks to Eden Hazard’s first half penalty at Wembley as Antonio Conte’s men claimed their second major trophy under the Italian.
The Blues dominated proceedings in the first half, and although Manchester United did improve after the break, they were unable to conjure an equaliser.
The result left Manchester United without a trophy this season after they finished in second place in the Premier League table.
And Red Devils legend Ferdinand admits that they were made to pay for their failure to take their chances up front against the west London club on Saturday evening.
Speaking to BT Sport after the game, Ferdinand said: “Man United had loads of possession but there was no spike up front.
“They played into Chelsea’s hands in the first half.
“Manchester United just didn’t produce enough quality in the final third to really unnerve this Chelsea team, who set their stall up to counter-attack this team.”
Manchester United are likely to look to sign a number of players in the coming weeks and months as Jose Mourinho looks to strengthen his squad ahead of next season.
The Red Devils will be hoping to mount a serious title challenge next term after having failed to win the Premier League since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement back in 2013.
