Antonio Conte sends Chelsea FC message to Alvaro Morata after FA Cup final
Chelsea FC manager Antonio Conte backs Alvaro Morata to go to the World Cup with Spain
Antonio Conte has insisted that Alvaro Morata does deserve a place in the Spain squad for this summer’s World Cup, despite his disappointing form for Chelsea FC.
The Spain international has found his first-team opportunities to be few and far between in recent months following Olivier Giroud’s arrival at Stamford Bridge from Arsenal back in January.
Morata started the season strongly but his form tailed off in the middle part of the campaign after he suffered a hampering back injury.
His lack of playing time in recent weeks has inevitably prompted speculation that he could be set to miss out on a place in the Spanish World Cup squad, which is due to be announced on Monday morning.
However, Conte has insisted that Morata would be fully deserving of a spot in the Spain squad for this summer’s World Cup in Russia.
Speaking at his post-match news conference on Sunday, Conte said: “Absolutely [Morata deserves to go to the World Cup].
“Morata is in really good form and today I made an important decision because I felt the only way to win was to play a really strong physical player like Giroud to hold up the ball and link with Hazard.
“But for sure Alvaro is an important player. It’s not my task, I did this job with the national team, but for the World Cup it’s right for Morata to be in the squad of 23 and play in the World Cup.
“I’m the first to put my hand in the fire, I see him every day and after a tough season he has improved a lot.”
Morata came on to play the final moments of Chelsea FC’s FA Cup final victory over Manchester United at Wembley on Saturday afternoon.
The striker has been settling into life at Stamford Bridge after having signed for the Blues from Real Madrid last July.
