Pat Nevin adamant 31-year-old still has Chelsea FC future
The Chelsea FC legend believes David Luiz still has a future at the west London side
Pat Nevin believes David Luiz still has a future at Chelsea FC despite being out of favour under Antonio Conte in the 2017-18 Premier League season.
The Blues re-signed Luiz in a £32m deal from Ligue 1 outfit Paris Saint-Germain in the 2016 summer transfer window following Conte’s appointment.
Luiz was a key part of Chelsea FC’s title-winning campaign after he forged an impressive partnership with Cesar Azpilicueta and Gary Cahill.
However, Conte made the decision to go with Andreas Christensen ahead of Luiz throughout most of the 2017-18 season, while summer signing Antonio Rudiger provided increased competition for a starting spot.
Luiz has also struggled with a number of injury problems to cast doubt surrounding the 31-year-old South American’s future at the west London side ahead of the 2018 summer transfer window.
Conte’s future remains unresolved at Chelsea FC amid talk of the no nonsense Italian head coach departing in the summer following a disappointing season.
Former Chelsea FC winger Nevin is adamant that Luiz still has a future at Stamford Bridge.
“A fit-again David Luiz would offer plenty of options as he is a quality option at the back and in midfield,” Nevin told Chelsea FC’s website.
The Blues were 1-0 winners against Manchester United in the FA Cup final at Wembley last weekend after Eden Hazard’s first-half penalty.
Chelsea FC finished in fifth place in the Premier League table.
