Paul Merson believes Chelsea FC won’t spend lavish money on new signings in the summer transfer window.
The Blues have endured a disappointing second season under Antonio Conte despite winning the Premier League title with two games to spare last term.
The west London side ended up in fifth place in the Premier League table and five points adrift of fourth-placed Liverpool FC following a 3-0 loss to Newcastle United on the final day of the season.
Chelsea FC won the Premier League title with two games to spare last season but the Blues finished a staggering 30 points adrift of current champions Manchester City to highlight the gap between the two clubs.
Antonio Conte’s future has been a source of relentless debate over the past six months or so after it became apparent that the Chelsea FC boss was unhappy with some of the club’s signings.
Former Arsenal star Merson doesn’t believe Chelsea FC have the funds to spend big on summer signings.
“You do have to wonder what comes next for Chelsea. It’s all gone very quiet on who they will get as the next manager and I think the days of them spending tons of money every summer are gone,” Merson told the Daily Star.
Chelsea FC won the Premier League title last season in Conte’s first campaign in charge of the west London club.
The Blues lost 4-1 to FC Barcelona in the Champions League round of 16.
