Jamie Redknapp has challenged Ainsley Maitland-Niles to prove his worth at Arsenal to the new manager at The Emirates.

The young midfielder was named as the man of the match following his impressive performance in Arsenal’s 2-1 loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

It is rare that a player on the losing side is handed the award, highlighting just how impressive the midfielder was for Arsene Wenger’s men against the Red Devils.

Arsenal are set to announce their new manager in the coming weeks after Wenger confirmed that he will be stepping down at the end of the season after almost 22 years in charge.

Redknapp feels that it was time for a change at The Emirates and the former Liverpool FC midfielder believes that the situation is going to be a great opportunity for the likes of Maitland-Niles at Arsenal.

Speaking to Sky Sports after Sunday’s game, ex-midfielder Redknapp said: “I think it’s exciting times for Arsenal now, I really do.

“If they win the Europa League then fantastic, but next season everyone starts afresh. They’ve had the same voice there for too long.

“People are going to get a good opportunity next year. I hope Maitland-Niles comes back hungry and shows the manager that he is ready to play in this team.

“Whoever the manager is that comes in, I think it will lift the place – and it needs it.”

Arsenal are now fully focused on their crunch Europa League showdown with Atletico Madrid in Spain on Thursday night.

The Gunners are aiming to try and win the Europa League this season to book their place in the group stage of the Champions League for next season.
