The Belgian striker has been missing with an ankle injury in recent weeks and has been undergoing his rehabilitation in his native homeland.
Lukaku has been an ever-present fixture in the Manchester United side this season since signing for the Red Devils from Everton in the summer transfer window last July.
However, the forward is now facing a race against time to prove his fitness ahead of Manchester United’s crunch showdown with Chelsea FC at Wembley next Saturday evening.
Speaking at his pre-match news conference at Carrington on Friday, Mourinho delivered the latest update on Lukaku’s situation.
Mourinho said: “We hope he can play in the final.
“He is in Belgium, having his treatment with communication between the doctors in Belgium and our medical department.
“We are just waiting to see if it’s possible for him to be involved in the final. If not starting, then at least on the bench.”
Meanwhile, Manchester United are currently preparing for their final Premier League game of the season against Watford at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Devils secured second spot in the Premier League this season thanks to their goalless draw with West Ham in midweek.
Manchester United are likely to be linked with a host of players in the coming weeks and months as Mourinho looks to assemble a squad capable of winning the title next season.
