Martin Keown sends stern warning to Liverpool FC star ahead of Brighton clash
The Arsenal legend is worried that Liverpool FC star James Milner could suffer an injury ahead of the Champions League final
Martin Keown has warned James Milner about getting injury in Liverpool FC’s final Premier League game of the 2017-18 season.
The Reds will take on La Liga giants Real Madrid in the Champions League final in Kiev later this month.
The Merseyside outfit still have the small matter of wrapping up a fourth-placed finish ahead of 2017 champions Chelsea FC.
Liverpool FC will have to beat Brighton and Hove Albion this weekend to be assured of Champions League football next term.
The 18-time English champions have failed to win their last four Premier League games to give Chelsea FC hope of sneaking a top-four spot.
Liverpool FC have already lost Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Joe Gomez to injury ahead of the Champions League final later this month.
Former Arsenal star Keown has warned Milner and his colleagues to be careful against Brighton at Anfield this weekend.
“Liverpool go into the final day of the league season knowing a draw against Brighton will secure their top four spot but it will be in the back of the players’ minds that they do not want to get injured,” Keown has told the Daily Mail.
“I missed Arsenal’s Cup Winners’ Cup victory in 1994 after getting injured in the league game beforehand.
“The Liverpool players have also seen two of their team-mates, Joe Gomez and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, suffer injury recently.
“They are going to have to manage their energy well. Even though the final is a fortnight after the Brighton game, the likes of James Milner should not be playing on Sunday.
“After missing that final in 1994, I vowed to never miss another through injury. I learned that I had to be a bit more sensible in the games leading up to finals.
“While you have to still do the job that is expected of you, it is important to protect yourself.”
The Reds will take on current holders Real Madrid in the Champions League final after Liverpool FC beat AS Roma 7-6 on aggregate in the last four.
