Rio Ferdinand has highlighted the positive impact that Virgil van Dijk has managed to have on the Liverpool FC team this season.

The Netherlands international moved to Liverpool FC in a club record £75m deal from Premier League rivals Southampton in the January transfer window.

Van Dijk became the world’s most expensive defender when he completed a switch to Liverpool FC following months of speculation.

The Dutch centre-half has been able to soldify the Liverpool FC defence and bring out the best in his team-mates.

German goalkeeper Loris Karius has looked more assured with Van Dijk in front of the shot stopper, while inexperienced full-backs Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson have excelled alongside the January signing.

Van Dijk’s performances in the middle of Jurgen Klopp’s defence has helped Liverpool to reach the Champions League semi-final after the Reds kept three clean sheets in two-legged ties against FC Porto and Manchester City.

Former Manchester United defender Ferdinand hailed Van Dijk’s positive impact on the Liverpool FC side.

“The effects of Virgil van Dijk this season since he’s been brought in has been huge for this Liverpool team,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.

“He’s settled everyone around him. Top players settle people around them and make other players better. He is the person who gels it all together.”

Liverpool FC are in third place in the Premier League table and six points ahead of Chelsea FC ahead of their meeting at Stamford Bridge in their next top-flight fixture on Sunday evening.
