Mark Lawrenson claims Jurgen Klopp is similar to Liverpool FC legend
The Liverpool FC legend compares Jurgen Klopp to Bill Shankly
Mark Lawrenson believes Jurgen Klopp embodies some of the same characteristics as Liverpool FC legend Bill Shankly after the Reds reached the Champions League final.
The German head coach led Liverpool FC to their second European showpiece in three seasons thanks to a dramatic 7-6 aggregate win against Italian giants AS Roma in the last four.
Liverpool FC were leading 5-0 in the first leg at Anfield courtesy of goals from Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane before AS Roma scored twice in the final 10 minutes.
The Reds squandered a lead twice in Rome but managed to hold on to progress to the Kiev final despite a 4-2 loss to the Serie A giants in the second leg at the Stadio Olimpico.
Klopp became the fourth Liverpool FC manager to guide the Reds to the European Cup final after Bob Paisley, Joe Fagan and Rafael Benitez.
However, former Liverpool FC defender Lawrenson believes Klopp shares more in common with the Reds’ first iconic manager Shankly.
“He gets the history of the football club,” Klopp told BBC Sport. “He gets the supporters.
“I am loathe to compare people but there is so much of Shankly in him. He is a different version. He is a modern day version of Shankly. He can operate people. He can get people on his side. ”
Liverpool FC will take on Real Madrid in the Champions League final in Kiev later this month after the current holders were 4-3 winners against Bayern Munich in their semi-final.
The Reds were 1-0 winners against Real Madrid in their only previous meeting in the European Cup final thanks to Alan Kennedy’s winner at Wembley in 1981.
