Mark Lawrenson: Why Liverpool FC’s Loris Karus is better than Real Madrid goalkeeper
The Liverpool FC legend believes Loris Karius is a better goalkeeper than Real Madrid shot stopper Keylor Navas
Mark Lawrenson admits he would take Loris Karius over Keylor Navas ahead of Liverpool FC’s clash against Real Madrid in the Champions League final on Saturday.
The Reds will take on the current holders in Kiev as Liverpool FC look to win the Champions League trophy for the first time since 2005.
The Merseyside outfit were 5-0 aggregate winners against Portuguese side FC Porto before Liverpool FC eased to a 5-1 victory over Premier League champions Manchester City in the quarter-final stage.
Jurgen Klopp’s side eased to a 5-2 win against AS Roma in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final, while the Reds managed to progress to the final on aggregate despite a 4-1 loss in the Italian capital.
Karius has impressed in the second half of the season with the addition of Netherlands international Virgil van Dijk appearing to bring out the best in the German shot stopper.
Liverpool FC have been linked with a potential swoop to sign a new goalkeeper in the summer transfer window despite Karius’ steady improvement in recent months.
Former Reds defender Lawrenson insists he would rather Karius over Navas ahead of the Champions League showpiece this weekend.
“I’m not the biggest fan, but I would take the Liverpool keeper over Navas,” Lawrenson told Paddy Power.
“It’s hard to understand why a team like Madrid haven’t gone and signed a world class goalkeeper since Iker Casillas left.
“Navas is a good shotstopper, but you’ll find ten of those out of the Championship. It’s a close-run thing, but I would take Karius.”
Liverpool FC finished in fourth place in the Premier League table.
