Paul Merson names Liverpool FC star as Premier League’s surprise package
The Arsenal legend has been impressed with Trent Alexander-Arnold's first season at Liverpool FC
Paul Merson has named Liverpool FC defender Trent Alexander-Arnold as the Premier League’s breakout star this season.
The 19-year-old is expected to feature in Liverpool FC’s clash against La Liga giants Real Madrid in the Champions League final later this month.
Alexander-Arnold has been a regular in the Reds team over the past few months after establishing himself as first-choice right-back.
The teenager impressed in Liverpool FC’s victories over FC Porto, Manchester City and AS Roma in the Champions League knockout phase.
The England international has scored one goal and has one assist in 18 appearances in the Premier League this season.
Alexander-Arnold has netted two goals and has made one assist in 10 Champions League outings this term.
Liverpool FC were 4-0 winners against Brighton and Hove Albion in their final Premier League game at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.
Former Arsenal star Merson heaped praise on Alexander-Arnold following his brilliant performances in the Liverpool FC team.
“To play in the big games Alexander-Arnold has played in, considering where he’s come from, is remarkable,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“He’s played in big, big football matches and shown unbelievable temperament.”
He added: “It might just be a bit late for him to make it to the World Cup as England have some established right-back options ahead of him but he’s nailed on for the next major tournament if he carries on doing what he is doing.”
The Reds will take on current holders Real Madrid in the Champions League final after Liverpool FC beat AS Roma 7-6 on aggregate in the last four.
