Steven Gerrard sent a message of congratulations to Jurgen Klopp and his Liverpool FC team after the Reds booked their place in the Champions League final in Rome on Wednesday night.

The Merseyside outfit were 5-2 winners against AS Roma in the first leg at Anfield last week to put themselves in a commanding position ahead of the return trip to Italy.

Liverpool FC opened the scoring in the opening 10 minutes thanks to Sadio Mane’s goal before James Milner’s own goal gave AS Roma a lifeline.

The Reds restored their lead through Georginio Wijnaldum before half-time but Edin Dzeko restored parity early in the second half.

Belgium international scored two late goals to ensure a nervous end to the Champions League clash but Liverpool FC managed to progress thanks to a 7-6 aggregate win.

Former Liverpool FC captain Gerrard was quick to congratulate Klopp and his Liverpool FC players on reaching their first Champions League final under the German head coach.

“Incredible achievement,” Gerrard told BT Sport.

“Congratulations to Jurgen Klopp and the players – they’re the ones who have taken the fans on this journey and they deserve all of the credit and all the plaudits they get in the coming days.

“They’ve set themselves up for a mouthwatering final against the giants in Real Madrid. They should go in with confidence and belief that they can go all the way now.”

Gerrard was the last Liverpool FC captain to lift the Champions League trophy back in 2005.

The Reds will take on current holders Real Madrid in the Champions League final in Kiev next month.

Liverpool FC are looking to win the competition for a sixth time.
