Rio Ferdinand responds as Liverpool FC reach Champions League final
Rio Ferdinand was watching on as Liverpool FC set up a Champions League final clash against Real Madrid after beating AS Roma on aggregate
Rio Ferdinand took to social media to react to Liverpool FC’s performance as the Reds booked their place in the Champions League final despite a 4-2 loss to AS Roma on Wednesday night.
The Reds headed into the game after having wrapped up a 5-2 win in the first leg at Anfield last week.
Sadio Mane fired the visitors into an early lead with a cool finish in the ninth minute.
However, James Milner’s unfortunate own-goal allowed AS Roma to level the score on the night in the 15th minute in the Italian capital.
Georginio Wijnaldum then headed home from close range to put Liverpool FC 7-3 up on aggregate.
But Edin Dzeko fired home from inside the box in the 52nd minute after the ball was parried into his path by Loris Karius.
Radja Nainggolan smashed home another goal in the 87th minute to make it 3-2 to AS Roma on the night, before hitting home a penalty in stoppage time.
And former Manchester United defender Ferdinand was clearly impressed by what he was seeing from Jurgen Klopp’s men early on during the game, before AS Roma’s two goals.
Ferdinand tweeted after Wijnaldum’s goal: “Game… Set… Match! @btsportfootball #Roma 1 – 2 #LFC.”
Little did he know how the match would pan out from there, however.
Liverpool FC will now turn their attentions towards their Premier League trip to Chelsea FC on Sunday afternoon.
The Reds will take on Real Madrid in the Champions League final later this month in Kiev, Ukraine.
