Liverpool FC owner sends message to Philippe Coutinho ahead of Champions League final
John W Henry delivers his verdict on Philippe Coutinho's decision to quit Liverpool FC for FC Barcelona
John W Henry has taken a swipe at Philippe Coutinho as Liverpool FC prepare to take on Real Madrid in the Champions League final on Saturday.
Coutinho pushed for a move to FC Barcelona in the January transfer window and his wish was finally granted as the Reds sold him to the Spanish giants at the turn of the year.
Liverpool FC have been in fine form in Europe this season and Jurgen Klopp’s men have earned lots of praise for their impressive performances in the Champions League, with the Reds having beaten the likes of Manchester City and AS Roma on their way to the final.
Coutinho had been heavily linked with a move to FC Barcelona before the transfer eventually went through in January.
And Henry has sent a message to both him and Luis Suarez after the pair both chose to leave Liverpool FC for FC Barcelona in recent years.
Speaking in an interview with AP, Henry said: “They’ll be watching this weekend and could have been playing.
“But (part owner) Mike Gordon, (sporting director) Michael Edwards and everyone in our scouting department have done a terrific job in making the best of those two difficult situations.
“You don’t want to be in the position where players want to go somewhere else, even if it is a great club like Barcelona.
“It’s hard to understand why players would want to go to a league where the competition is so weak. They must play 30 or so meaningless matches per year waiting for Champions League matches.”
Liverpool FC are aiming to win their first trophy under Klopp following his appointment as Brendan Rodgers’ successor back in October 2015.
The Reds head into the game after having secured their place in the Champions League for next season via a top-four finish in the Premier League this term.
