Martin Keown wants 28-year-old to start Liverpool FC v Real Madrid
The Arsenal legend is hoping to see Gareth Bale start for Real Madrid against Liverpool FC in the Champions League final
Martin Keown has urged Zinedine Zidane to start Gareth Bale in Real Madrid’s clash against Liverpool FC in the Champions League final.
The Wales international has struggled to hold down a starting spot in the Frenchman’s starting XI in the Kiev showpiece later this month.
Liverpool FC were 5-2 winners against Serie A giants AS Roma in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final last month.
The Reds lost 4-2 to the Italian giants in the second leg at the Stadio Olimpico but progressed to the Champions League showpiece 7-6 on aggregate.
The Merseyside outfit’s reward is a clash against La Liga giants Real Madrid in the Champions League showpiece after the holders edged past Bayern Munich.
Bale has fallen behind Marco Asensio, Isco and Luis Vazquez in the Real Madrid pecking order despite being part of three title-winning teams.
Former Arsenal defender Keown is hoping that Bale is given the chance to shine against familiar opponents in the Champions League final.
“I would love to see Bale play. In the second half against Bayern Munich, I felt Madrid needed the threat going forwards that Bale can provide,” Keown told the Daily Mail.
“He will relish the opportunity to face Liverpool and prove that he is still a quality act.
“Bale has the ability to be the top dog at Real Madrid but he seems to have accepted that Ronaldo is the main man at the Bernabeu.
“It is so hard to second-guess Zinedine Zidane’s team selection. I just hope he can find a way to play Bale in the final.”
Liverpool FC are looking to win their first Champions League title since 2005 when the Reds beat AC Milan on penalties in Istanbul.
The Merseyside outfit lost 3-1 to Spanish side Sevilla in the Europa League final in Basel in 2015.
