Steven Gerrard sends message to Loris Karius after Liverpool FC loss to Real Madrid
Steven Gerrard sends a message to Loris Karius after his sloppy errors in Liverpool FC's Champions League final defeat by Real Madrid
Steven Gerrard has told Loris Karius that he can count on the support of the Liverpool FC fans despite his errors leading to Real Madrid’s 3-1 win over the Reds in the Champions League final.
After a goalless first half in which Mohamed Salah had to be substituted due to a shoulder injury, Real Madrid took the lead in the 51st minute when Karim Benzema pounced on Karius’ sloppy through to fire into the empty net.
However, Liverpool FC drew level just four minutes later when Sadio Mane netted from close range for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Gareth Bale then made it 2-1 to Real Madrid with an incredible overhead kick just moments after having come on as a substitue in the second half in Kiev.
And Karius’ night then got worse, when he parried Bale’s long-range effort into the net in the 83rd minute as Real Madrid won the Champions League.
Gerrard admits that Karius is set to come under intense scrutiny over the summer, but the former Liverpool FC captain also had some comforting words for the German goalkeeper.
Speaking to BT Sport after the game, Gerrard said: “It’s tough. No one makes a mistake on purpose.
“Liverpool fans are educated, they are forgiving. They love the players and adore them. These Liverpool fans will back you when times are tough and also when you’re on top of the world as well.
“[But] he’s in for a tough summer.”
The win handed Real Madrid their third Champions League title in as many years as their domination of the competition continues.
