Martin Keown names the key battle in Liverpool FC v Real Madrid
The Arsenal legend believes Mo Salah's clash against Marcelo will be the key battle in Liverpool FC's tie against Real Madrid in the Champions League final
Martin Keown believes the battle between Liverpool FC star Mohamed Salah and Real Madrid defender Marcelo will decide the Champions League final.
The Reds secured their place in their first Champions League final since 2007 when Liverpool FC lost 2-1 to AC Milan at Athens.
The Merseyside outfit haven’t won the competition since 2005 when Liverpool FC beat AC Milan on penalties in Istanbul.
Liverpool FC were 7-6 aggregate winners against AS Roma in the Champions League semi-finals following a dramatic clash in Rome.
Jurgen Klopp’s side will have to find a way of beating 13-time winners Real Madrid to get their hands on the Champions League trophy for the first time in 13 seasons.
Salah has scored 10 times in 14 games in the Champions League this season to help the Reds reach the European showpiece.
Marcelo was pivotal in Real Madrid’s 4-3 aggregate win against Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich in the Champions League lasts four.
Former Arsenal star Keown believes the outcome on the Champions League final could depend on the battle between Marcelo and Salah.
“Marcelo has to be the best attacking left back in the world,” Keown told the Daily Mail.
“His cross for Karim Benzema was like an arrow. Few players must be able to control a football better than him.
“The problem is that when he goes forwards, he leaves a massive hole behind. Who will be waiting to exploit that space in Kiev? Mohamed Salah.
“By pushing Marcelo back, Salah can nullify one of Real Madrid’s biggest weapons.
“There promises to be an epic battle in this area of the pitch.”
Liverpool FC are in third place in the Premier League table in pursuit of consecutive top-four finishes.
