Phil Thompson predicts Liverpool FC v Real Madrid in Champions League final
The Liverpool FC legend believes Real Madrid are ideal opponents for Jurgen Klopp's side
Phil Thompson believes Liverpool FC will be able to beat Real Madrid in the Champions League final in Kiev on Saturday evening.
The Reds will take on the Spanish giants in their first Champions League final since 2005 when Liverpool FC came from 3-0 down to beat AC Milan on penalties in Istanbul.
Liverpool FC are the competition’s leading goal-scorers following an incredible return of 46 goals in 14 games in the Champions League in the current campaign.
The Merseyside outfit eased past Portuguese side FC Porto, Premier League champions Manchester City and Serie A giants AS Roma in the Champions League knockout stage.
The Reds were particularly impressive in their 5-1 dismantling of Pep Guardiola’s side over two legs as Liverpool FC’s pace on the counter-attack proved too much for the Citizens.
Former Liverpool FC captain Thompson believes the Reds can cause similar destruction against Real Madrid in the Champions League final in Kiev on Saturday evening.
“If you look at the games where we’ve played really well, it was three wins against Man City,” Thompson told Irish radio station Newstalk.
“They can only play one way. They can only attack. They can’t park the bus. That’s how Real Madrid play.”
Thompson was Liverpool FC captain when the Reds were 1-0 winners against Real Madrid in the European Cup final in Paris in 1981.
Liverpool FC finished in fourth place in the Premier League table this term to secure their continued participation in the Champions League.
