Virgil van Dijk states his prediction for Liverpool FC v Real Madrid
The Liverpool FC centre-half wants his Reds team-mates to enjoy the Champions League final in Kiev on Saturday
Virgil van Dijk has urged the Liverpool FC team to enjoy their Champions League final clash against Real Madrid in Kiev on Saturday afternoon.
The Reds booked their place in the Champions League showpiece thanks to a 7-6 aggregate win against Serie A giants AS Roma in the last four.
Liverpool FC dispatched Portuguese outfit FC Porto and Premier League champions Manchester City in the previous rounds of the Champions League.
The Merseyside outfit will take on current holders Real Madrid in the final in Kiev as los Blancos look to win the competition for the fourth time in five seasons.
However, Van Dijk doesn’t want to see his Liverpool FC team-mates get overwhelmed by the occasion and urged the Reds to enjoy the Kiev showpiece.
“I’m very excited, obviously,” Van Dijk told Liverpool FC’s website.
“It’s a fantastic game and it almost doesn’t get any bigger than this game. We’re looking forward to it, we need to enjoy it and we need to be ready.
“It’s a game that not a lot of players play in during their careers. To be playing in the Champions League final with Liverpool is something special and I can’t wait for it.”
The Champions League final is a repeat of the 1981 European Cup showpiece when Liverpool FC won 1-0 in Paris to give them a third triumph in the competition in five years. That was Madrid’s last defeat in the final of this competition.
The Reds’ 1981 victory is also the only time an English club has beaten Spanish opposition in a European Cup final.
Indeed, La Liga clubs have won the other three meetings: FC Barcelona beating Arsenal 2-1 in 2006 and Manchester United in both 2009 (2-0) and 2011 (3-1).
