The Reds have been regularly linked with a move to sign a new shot stopper in the 2018 summer transfer window.
The Merseyside outfit have made Karius their first-choice goalkeeper over the past few months after replacing Simon Mignolet in the starting XI.
The Germany Under-21 international has made steady improvements to his game over the past few months since becoming first choice.
However, Karius made two individual errors in Liverpool FC’s 3-1 loss to Real Madrid in the Champions League final on Saturday evening.
Liverpool FC have been rumoured with an interest in AS Roma number one Alisson following his outstanding season at the Stadio Olimpico.
The Reds have also been linked with Stoke City’s England international Jack Butland ahead of the 2018-19 season.
Former Liverpool FC midfielder McAteer believes the Reds need a new shot stopper in the summer transfer window.
“Karius has come in for Mignolet and it was a very, very difficult start for him. When Van Dijk wasn’t there he was quite exposed and when the goals went in – because he’s a goalkeeper – he was highlighted,” said McAteer, speaking exclusively to 888sport.
“He was always up against it and had to win the crowd and pundits over. Van Dijk has calmed him but there is still a question mark over him for me.
“You look at the great teams who have won Premier League titles down the years and they had Seaman, Schmeichel, and they played a massive part: as star a player as the centre-forward. I don’t think Karius has that star quality.”
“Alisson and Butland are the names being bandied about and the kid at AC Milan”
Liverpool FC haven’t won the Premier League title but will be hoping to make a title tilt against Manchester City this term.
The Reds signed Netherlands international Virgil van Dijk in a £75m deal from Premier League rivals Southampton in the January transfer window.
