Rio Ferdinand responds to Mo Salah’s injury in Liverpool FC v Real Madrid
Rio Ferdinand has his say after Mo Salah was forced off injured in the first half of the Champions League final as Real Madrid beat Liverpool FC 3-1
Rio Ferdinand has admitted that he was gutted to see Mohamed Salah have to come off in the first half of the Champions League final clash between Liverpool FC and Real Madrid.
Real Madrid ended up triumphing 3-1 to secure the Champions League trophy for the third season running, but it could have been a different story if Salah had stayed on the pitch.
The Egypt international has been one of European football’s top performing players this season since his move to Anfield from AS Roma last summer.
Salah scored a staggering 44 goals in all competitions for the Reds to help them set up their Champions League showdown with the Spanish side on Saturday night.
The 25-year-old fell awkwardly during a challenge with Sergio Ramos early in the first half in Kiev and was forced off in tears soon after.
It was not the end to the season that the Egypt international was hoping for, and former Manchester United defender Ferdinand admitted that he was upset for the Liverpool FC star.
Speaking to BT Sport at half-time, Ferdinand said: “It’s so unfortunate to see something like that in a game of this magnitude.
“With the season that he’s had, it’s not the way you wanted to see this end [for him].”
Real Madrid took the lead on the night when Karim Benzema capitalised on Loris Karius’s sloppy throw to net in the 51st minute.
However, Liverpool FC levelled just four minutes later when Sadio Mane netted an equaliser to hand the Reds hope.
But substitute Gareth Bale scored an incredible over-head kick in the 64th minute just moments after coming off the bench.
And Bale added a second to make it 3-1 in the 83rd minute after another error from Karius as Real Madrid celebrated winning the Champions League for the third year running.
