Sky Sports pundit explains why David De Gea isn’t Man United’s best player this season
The Arsenal legend names Jesse Lingard as Manchester United's player of the season
Charlie Nicholas has named Jesse Lingard as Manchester United’s player of the season ahead of David De Gea.
The England international has been in incredible form in the current campaign after becoming an important member of Jose Mourinho’s squad.
Lingard scored eight goals and made five assists in 33 games in the Premier League in the 2017-18 season to finish as their third-highest goal-scorer behind Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial.
The 25-year-old netted two goals in five FA Cup outings to help Manchester United reach Wembley for the second time in three seasons.
De Gea was voted Manchester United’s player of the season following another incredible campaign for the Spanish shot stopper despite the struggles of his team-mates.
Former Arsenal midfielder Nicholas claimed that Lingard has been Manchester United’s best player this season ahead of De Gea.
“I know David De Gea got it from the club but I hate to give it to goalkeepers unless they’ve been unbelievable for a lesser team,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.
“Yes, he’s the best goalkeeper in the world, but I would actually give it to Jesse Lingard because he scores goals and brings entertainment to an otherwise bland team.
“He’s now a certainty to start in the World Cup for me.”
The Spain international has been linked with a move to La Liga giants Real Madrid over the past three or four seasons.
De Gea has been the subject of a fresh wave of transfer speculation ahead of the 2018 summer transfer window.
The Manchester United goalkeeper has won the Premier League title, the FA Cup, the League Cup and the Europa League since his move to Old Trafford from Atletico Madrid in 2011.
