Jose Mourinho has challenged his Manchester United team to secure second place in the Premier League table this season.

The Red Devils took another big step towards finishing as runners-up to Manchester City on Sunday when they claimed a 2-1 win over Arsenal at Old Trafford in the top flight.

Mourinho will now be hoping to guide Manchester United to their highest finish since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement back in 2013.

And the Portuguese coach has talked up the importance of his side securing second spot this term ahead of a potential Premier League title challenge next season.

Speaking at his post-match news conference after the win over Arsenal, Mourinho said: “We need, I think, two points or one point to finish third and four to finish second.

“So we are not far from the position I believe we deserve. If we finish second, I think it’s the first time for five years, so since Sir Alex left, but OK.

“There is progress at many levels but not enough to be first instead of second and not enough to win the Champions League instead of the Europa League.

“But enough to finish second in the table and win some trophies, and go to some finals, but we need to do more.”

Manchester United have not won the Premier League title since their final triumph under Sir Alex Ferguson back in 2013.

The Red Devils are still aiming to end this season with a trophy when they take on Chelsea FC in the FA Cup final at Wembley later this month.

Meanwhile, Mourinho is bound to have one eye on potential transfer targets for this season as he looks to strengthen his squad ahead of his third campaign in charge at Old Trafford.

Manchester United will return to Premier League action when they take on Brighton and Hove Albion on Friday night.
