Manchester United are confident of winning the race to sign Lazio star Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, according to a report in England.
The Independent, as quoted by the Metro, is reporting that the Red Devils are closing in on the signing of the 23-year-old from the Serie A giants.
The same article states that Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is desperate to sign at least one midfielder to replace Michael Carrick at the end of the season.
According to the story, the Red Devils have watched the Serbia international at least 12 times over the past season or so ahead of a potential move.
Mourinho is confident that Milinkovic-Savic could be the perfect candidate to complete his midfield trio of Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic.
Lazio are reported to value the Serbian playmaker at around £90m ahead of Manchester United’s potential summer swoop for the talented midfielder.
Milinkovic-Savic has also been linked with the Red Devils’ bitter rivals Liverpool FC over the past couple of transfer windows.
Manchester United are in second place in the Premier League table but have to make up a 16 point deficit on champions Manchester City.
The Red Devils haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013.
