Samuel Umtiti gives update on FC Barcelona situation amid Man United speculation
The FC Barcelona defender appears to commit his future to the Catalan side despite Manchester United links
Samuel Umtiti has appeared to commit his future to FC Barcelona to deal a hammerblow to Manchester United’s hopes of signing the France defender.
The Red Devils have been heavily linked with a move to sign the France international in the 2018 summer transfer window amid rumbling of discontent coming from Umtiti’s camp.
The 24-year-old has been in negotiations with the Catalan side over a new contract but the talks had proved fruitless for both parties so far.
As a result, Manchester United were linked with a potetial swoop to sign the FC Barcelona star to improve what has become a problem position for Jose Mourinho.
The former Lyon defender has a £52.5million contract release clause to open up the possibility of a switch to Manchester United to improve their back four.
However, Umtiti has commited his future to FC Barcelona to dash Manchester United’s hopes of a summer deal.
“It is clear that I want to renew my contract at Barcelona and I hope to be with the team next season,” Umtiti told l’Equipe, as quoted by The Sun.
“I’m at a club that allowed me to realise my dream of playing there.
“I’m still under contract at the moment. So for me to leave, either they throw me out the door or I decide to leave.”
Manchester United started with Phil Jones and Chris Smalling at centre-half in their 1-0 loss to Chelsea FC in the FA Cup final at Wembley earlier this month.
Jones was guilty of a reckless challenge to allow Eden Hazard to score Chelsea FC’s winner from the penalty spot.
