The Belgium international is facing an uncertain future at the north London outfit after Alderweireld failed to agree a new contract with Tottenham with little over 12 months remaining on his current deal.
Spurs could activate a clause in the centre-half’s current contract that would see Alderweireld remain for another 12 months but would put in place a £25m contract release clause in his new deal.
Alderweireld has established himself as a top Premier League defender during his three seasons at the north London outfit.
The Belgian star has been linked with a potential move to Manchester United in recent weeks, while Alderweireld has also been touted as a target for Liverpool FC and Manchester City.
Belgian reporter Terreur confirmed that Manchester United have shown an interest in the Tottenham defender.
“Man United are looking for a defender,” Terreur told Transfer Talk podcast.
“They have made some phone calls about him. They haven’t made an offer yet. I wonder if Spurs want to do business with a direct competitor.”
Alderweireld has scored six goals in 115 appearances in all competitions during his three season-spell at the north London club.
The Tottenham star is still waiting to win his first trophy at the north London side following his permanent switch from Atletico Madrid in 2015.
