Unai Emery has spoken of his excitement at taking over the reins of Arsenal for an exciting new chapter at the north London club.

The Gunners confirmed the Spanish coach as Arsene Wenger’s successor on Wednesday and the 46-year-old faced the British media for the first time.

Emery will be tasked with leading Arsenal back into the Champions League after the Gunners finished outside the top four in the past two seasons.

Arsenal haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04, while the north London side haven’t reached the Champions League quarter-finals since 2010.

Emery won the Europa League title three times with Sevilla before the Spanish head coach led Paris Saint-Germain to the Ligue 1 title this term.

Speaking at his media conference on Wednesday afternoon, Emery opened up about being Wenger’s successor at the Emirates Stadium.

“I am thrilled to be joining one of the great clubs in the game,” Emery said. “Arsenal is known and loved throughout the world for its style of play, its commitment to young players, the fantastic stadium, the way the club is run.

“I’m very excited to be given the responsibility to start this important new chapter in Arsenal’s history. I have met Stan and Josh Kroenke and it’s clear they have great ambitions for the club and are committed to bringing future success.

“I’m excited about what we can do together and I look forward to giving everyone who loves Arsenal some special moments and memories.”

Arsenal lost 2-1 to La Liga side Atletico Madrid in the Europa League semi-finals earlier this month to miss out on an alternative route into the Champions League.

The Gunners signed Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Manchester United midfielder Henrikh Mhitaryan in the January transfer window.

Arsenal finished off Wenger’s reign with a 1-0 win at Huddersfield Town in their final Premier League game of the campaign.
