Danny Murphy has rubbished the suggestion that Zeljko Buvac could be appointed as the next Arsenal manager.

The Gunners are on the lookout for a replacement for Arsene Wenger after the 68-year-old confirmed that he will stand down at the end of the current campaign.

Arsenal have been linked with Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri, Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone and Celtic head coach Brendan Rodgers in recent weeks.

Club legends such as Mikel Arteta, Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira have all been linked with the soon-to-be vacant position at Arsenal.

However, reports this week have claimed that Arsenal will appoint Liverpool FC number two Buvac as Wenger’s replacement.

The Bosnian coach has worked under Jurgen Klopp for the past 17 seasons at Mainz 05, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool FC.

Arsenal head of recruitment Sven Mislintat worked with Buvac for five seasons at Dortmund, while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan will be familiar with his methods.

Former Liverpool FC and Tottenham star Murphy emphatically quashed the suggestion that Buvac would be a good choice to replace Wenger.

“I would find it unbelievable to appoint someone who has never, ever managed as a number one at a club like Arsenal,” Murphy told Sky Sports.

“I think that would be ridiculous for a club like Arsenal. ‘It doesn’t matter how intelligent he is or what he’s done because doing it as a number two is nothing like doing it as a number one.”

Arsenal are in sixth place in the Premier League table following another disappointing season for the north London side.
