Stan Kroenke breaks silence on Unai Emery Arsenal appointment
Stan Kroenke explains Arsenal's decision to appoint Unai Emery as the club's new manager
Stan Kroenke has backed Unai Emery as the man to lead Arsenal back to the top of English football.
The Spanish manager was confirmed as the north London club’s new boss on Wednesday after days of speculation linking him with the vacant managerial job at The Emirates.
Arsenal had been on the lookout for a new manager after Arsene Wenger opted to stand down at the end of the season after a 22-year stint in charge of the Gunners.
Emery emerged as the leading candidate to take over from Wenger at The Emirates on Monday, despite reports that the Gunners were leaning towards appointing Mikel Arteta as their new boss.
Arsenal majority shareholder Kroenke is famous for not speaking much in public, but he was quick to reveal the reasons why the Gunners had chosen to appoint the former Paris Saint-Germain boss this week.
Speaking to Arsenal’s website, Kroenke said: “We’re delighted to welcome Unai to Arsenal. He’s a proven winner.
“We’re confident that he is the right person for the job and that he will work to deliver the triumphs our fans, staff and everyone who cares about Arsenal want.
“Several things stood out during his interview and the entire process; his football knowledge, energy, determination and love of the game.
“His familiarity with our club and our players, the Premier League and the game in Europe were all very impressive. He shares our vision to move forward, to build on the platform created by Arsene Wenger and help this club enjoy greater success.”
Attentions will now inevitably turn towards the summer transfer window and the players the Gunners could look to sign as Emery looks to stamp his authority at the north London club.
The north London side have not won the Premier League title since their famous unbeaten triumph in the 2003-04 campaign.
