Alexander Zverev won his second successive BMW Open title in Munich on Sunday, defeating countryman and three-time champion Philipp Kohlschreiber, 6-3, 6-3.

The final was the first all-German championship match since Zverev lost to Florian Mayer at the 2016 Gerry Weber Open. After successfully retaining a tour-level trophy for the first time, Zverev now owns seven ATP World Tour titles.

Zverev said: “I am obviously very happy with how I played, very happy to get back-to-back titles here [in Munich]. It is a very special event for me so I am very happy that I could defend my title.”

He now heads to the Madrid Masters, where he is the No2 seed.

In Estoril, Joao Sousa scored an emotional victory on home soil, beating Frances Tiafoe, 6-4, 6-4. It is 29 years since the ATP World Tour played its first tournament in Portugal, but Sousa is the first home player to lift the trophy.

This was his career third title, and he did it the hard way, saving two match points in the second round and surviving a final-set tiebreak against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semis.

Sousa said: “It’s just amazing. It’s a dream come true. It is very special for a Portuguese player to win here on home soil. I know how hard the organisation worked to make this tournament one of the best in the world and it’s just amazing. The crowd was unbelievable.”

There was silverware for three Britons in doubles competition, too. Kyle Edmund joined with Cameron Norrie in Estoril to win their first doubles title over Wesley Koolhof and Artem Sitak, 6-4, 6-2.

Meanwhile in Istanbul, Dom Inglot joined forces with Swede Robert Lindstedt to beat Ben McLachlan and Nicholas Monroe, 3-6, 6-3, 10-8.
