Unai Emery sends message to Arsenal supporters about Granit Xhaka’s new deal
The new Arsenal manager backs Granit Xhaka to improve in the coming seasons
Unai Emery has backed Granit Xhaka to develop into a better player after the Arsenal star signed a new long-term contract with the Gunners.
The Switzerland international is currently preparing for his country’s World Cup opener against tourmanent favourites Brazil in Russia on Sunday.
Xhaka moved to Arsenal in a £33m deal from Bundesliga giants Borussia Monchengladbach in the 2016 summer transfer window.
However, the defensive midfielder has struggled to justify his price tag and has been a disappointing in his first two seasons under Arsene Wenger.
The French head coach stood down as manager after a sixth-placed finish in the Premier League table last season.
His replacement Unai Emery has already set about leaving his mark on the Gunners after Arsenal signed Xhaka’s compatriot Stephan Lichtsteiner in a free transfer from Serie A giants Juventus.
The new Arsenal boss delivered his verdict on Xhaka’s new deal as the Gunners look to secure a return to Champions League football after a two-season absence from Europe’s top tier club competition.
“I’m delighted that Granit has extended his contract with us,” Emery told Arsenal’s website.
“He’s an important member of the squad and is still young so will be able to develop even more.
“I hope he has a successful World Cup with Switzerland and comes back fit and ready for the new season.”
Arsenal lost 3-0 to Premier League champions Manchester City in the League Cup final at Wembley last term.
The Gunners haven’t got their hands on the Premier League trophy since 2004.
