New Arsenal signing spoke to Shkodran Mustafi before move
Bernd Leno reveals that he spoke to Shkodran Mustafi before sealing his move to Arsenal last week
Bernd Leno has revealed that he spoke to Shkodran Mustafi about moving to Arsenal long before his summer transfer was completed last week.
The goalkeeper has become the north London side’s second signing of the summer transfer window after the Gunners were able to agree a deal with Bayer Leverkusen to bring him to the club.
Unai Emery has wasted no time in bolstering his squad since his appointment as the club’s new manager, as the north London side look to try and assemble a squad capable of breaking back into the top four next season.
Leno was officially confirmed as an Arsenal player last week, and the goalkeeper has now revealed that he spoke to his compatriots Mustafi and Mesut Ozil before completing his move.
Speaking in an interview with Arsenal Player, Leno said: “I already know Musti and Mesut Ozil from the national team, plus Xhaka, Aubameyang and Mkhitaryan from the Bundesliga.
“I talked to Musti about Arsenal many months ago. He said it’s a fantastic club with a fantastic stadium and fantastic fans.
“I watched games on the TV in Germany and yes, Arsenal is a fantastic club.
“I’ve known Musti for about 10 or 11 years. We grew up together in the youth national teams, the Under-17s through to the Under-21s.”
Arsenal will be looking to be able to challenge for a top four finish next season after the Gunners ended up in sixth place and without a trophy in Arsene Wenger’s final campaign in charge last term.
The north London side have not won the Premier League title since their famous unbeaten triumph in the 2003-04 campaign, although they have won the FA Cup three times in the last five years.
