The 27-year-old is widely regarded to be one of the finest holding midfielders in Europe and he has been earning huge amounts of praise for his performances for both club and country in recent years.
Kante helped Leicester City to win the Premier League title in the 2015-16 campaign before moving to Chelsea FC that summer and helping the Blues to lift the trophy in Antonio Conte’s first campaign at the west London club.
Arsenal were linked with a move for Kante before he ended up moving to Chelsea FC, as the Gunners instead signed Granit Xhaka from Borussia Monchengladbach.
Now, Wenger has confirmed that he twice tried to bring Kante to Arsenal before he ended up joining their London rivals.
Speaking in an interview with beIN Sports, Wenger said: “Have I looked to sign Kante? Yes. When he was in France and when he was at Leicester,
“I cannot explain everything [about why he preferred Chelsea FC] but it is quite obvious when you look at where he has gone.
“Was it the money? I do not want to talk about that. Transfers are transfers – you cannot explain absolutely everything.”
Kante helped France to claim a 2-1 victory over Australia in their opening group game at this summer’s World Cup in Russia.
He will be hoping to help Chelsea FC enjoy a strong campaign next season after the disappointment of their fifth placed finish in the Premier League means they will be playing in the Europa League next term.
