Arsenal, Tottenham battling to sign 23-year-old Portugal attacker – report
Arsenal and Tottenham are battling it out for the signing of Sporting Lisbon forward Gelson Martins, according to a report
Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are going head-to-head in a bid to sign Sporting Lisbon forward Gelson Martins, according to a report.
Jornal de Noticias, as quoted by the Daily Mirror, is reporting that the north London rivals are both monitoring the 23-year-old’s situation in Lisbon.
The same article states that Arsenal have already made two offers in the region of €30m to sign Martins in the current transfer window.
However, Martins has moved to rescind his current deal with Sporting Lisbon and if the winger is successful, the Portugal international will be available on a free transfer this summer.
Both Arsenal and Tottenham will be closely monitoring Martins at the World Cup ahead of Portugal’s opener against Spain in Russia on Friday.
Martins scored 13 goals in 52 games in all competitions for Sporting Lisbon last season to attract interest from the Premier League.
The Portuguese forward produced his most prolific season in 2017-18 season having previously netted 14 goals in his previous 88 outings over three seasons.
Arsenal signed Switzerland veteran Stephan Lichtsteiner in a free transfer from Serie A champions Juventus earlier this month.
The Gunners finished in sixth spot in the Premier League table last season and three spots below Tottenham.
