Arsenal are still working on a deal to sign Lucas Torreira, according to BBC Sport David Ornstein.

The north London side confirmed the signing of the Bayer Leverkusen shot stopper on Tuesday night to improve their options in goal.

Both Petr Cech and David Ospina struggled to find consistency last season to raise questions about the respective futures in the Arsenal team.

Sampdoria midfielder Torreira has emerged as a surprise target to strengthen Unai Emery’s midfield ahed of the Spanish head coach’s first season in charge.

The Gunners are thought to be ready to sign the Uruguay international in a £26m deal to improve Emery’s options in the middle of the park.

Arsenal have already signed veteran Switzerland international Stephan Lichtsteiner in a free transfer from Serie A giants Juventus this summer.

BBC Sport reporter Ornstein shed light on Arsenal’s pursuit of both Leno and Torreira in the current transfer window.

Ornstein wrote on Twitter before the Leno deal was confirmed: “Arsenal are in advanced talks to sign Germany goalkeeper Bernd Leno from Bayer Leverkusen. Not done but set to be decided today & expected 26-year-old will join #AFC – unclear which current GK would make way.

“Torreira pursuit ongoing – optimism but not done & #WorldCup delays it.”

Arsenal haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04 when the Gunners finished the season without a defeat.

The Gunners lost 3-0 to Premier League champions Manchester City in the League Cup final last term.
