Arsenal have failed with an offer to sign Sporting Lisbon midfielder Gelson Martins, according to a report in Portugal
Arsenal have had a £26m offer for Gelson Martins knocked back by Sporting Lisbon, according to a report in Portugal.
Portuguese outfit A Bola, as quoted by the The Sun, is reporting that the Gunners launched a bid to sign the attacker in the summer transfer window.
The same article states that Sporting Lisbon rejected their £26m offer to sign the 23-year-old after the Portuguese side placed a £39m asking price on the Portugal international.
According to the same story, Martins is furious with the Portuguese club given the turmoil at Sporting Lisbon involving the club’s president, board and squad at the end of the 2017-18 season.
Arsenal could face competition from Premier League rivals Liverpool FC and Manchester United with the Premier League duo also monitoring the Euro 2016 winner’s situation at Sporting Lisbon.
Martins has scored 25 goals in 125 appearances in all competitions over the past four seasons since coming through the youth ranks at Sporting Lisbon.
Arsenal signed Switzerland international Stephan Lichtsteiner in a free transfer from Serie A champions Juventus after the defender’s deal expired at the Italian club.
The Gunners finished in sixth spot in the Premier League table last term to miss out on a Champions League spot of the second successive season.
