Arsenal boost as 23-year-old terminates Sporting Lisbon contract – report
Arsenal have been handed a big boost after Gelson Martins terminated his Sporting Lisbon contract, say reports
Arsenal have been handed a boost in their reported pursuit of Gelson Martins after the winger cancelled his Sporting Lisbon contract, according to reports in Portugal.
Portuguese outlet Record, as quoted by Metro, is reporting that the 23-year-old is among a number of players to have cancelled their contracts with Sporting Lisbon, after a number of the club’s stars were shockingly attacked at their training ground last season.
Martins was one of Sporting Lisbon’s top players last season, scoring 13 goals and providing 13 assists in 52 appearances in all competitions.
Arsenal are believed to be interested in a move to bring the Portugal international to The Emirates this summer and their bid to sign him would have been considerably boosted if he has indeed ended his contract with Sporting Lisbon.
The same report cites other sources as claiming that Arsenal have already had two bids for Martins rejected by Sporting Lisbon, despite the player himself being keen on a move away.
Now, the same story says that Martins, William Carvalho and Bruno Fernandes have all made the decision to leave the club this summer and have submitted their letters of their resignation.
Arsenal are believed to be on the lookout for a number of new signings this summer as Unai Emery prepares for his first season in charge.
