Arsenal are willing to meet Sampdoria’s €30m (£26m) asking price to sign Lucas Torreira this summer, according to reports in Italy.

Sky Sport Italia, as quoted by Metro, is claiming that the Gunners are keen on a deal to land the 22-year-old midfielder this summer and are willing to match the Italian club’s valuation of the player.

According to the same story, the Uruguayan has a €25m (£22m) release clause in his contract with the Italian club, but the Serie A side have asked Arsenal to pay €30m and instead spread the payments out over several years.

That could suit Arsenal, given that the Gunners are understood to have a more restricted transfer budget this summer following their lack of Champions League football.

Arsenal are believed to be on the lookout for a number of key signings this summer as they look to put together a squad capable of challenging for the Premier League title next season.

The north London side missed out on Champions League qualification for the second season running last term when they ended up sixth in the Premier League table in Arsene Wenger’s final campaign in charge at The Emirates.

The Gunners have not won the Premier League since 2004.
