Arsenal face competition from Napoli for Uruguay midfielder – report
Arsenal are interested in a potential deal to sign Sampdoria star Lucas Torreira but face competition from Napoli, according to a report
Arsenal aren’t close to a deal to sign Sampdoria midfielder Lucas Torreira, according to a report in Italy.
Italian media outlet Il Mattino, as quoted by website Sport Witness, is reporting that the Gunners face competition from Serie A runners up Napoli in the Uruguay international.
The same article states that Sampdoria aren’t willing to sell the 22-year-old for less than his contract release clause.
According to the same story, the clause currently stands at €25m and Arsenal would have to meet that figure to force Sampdoria to sell the midfielder.
The South American scored four goals and made one assist in 36 games in Serie A last season to build upon his promising reputation.
The north London side haven’t qualified for the Champions League in the past two seasons to culminate in Arsene Wenger’s resignation.
The Gunners have appointed former Paris Saint-Germain and Sevilla manager Unai Emery as the Frenchman’s successor at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal have only signed veteran Switzerland defender Stephan Lichtsteiner in a free transfer from Serie A giants Juventus in the summer transfer window so far.
The Gunners haven’t won the Premier League title since 2004 and have regressed in the past decade or so.
