Arsenal to rival Dortmund to sign 31-year-old World Cup star – report
Arsenal will rival Dortmund for the signature of Juventus defender Mehdi Benatia, according to a report
Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund are set to battle it out for the signing of Juventus defender Mehdi Benatia, according to a report in Italy.
Italian media outlet Gazzetta dello Sport, as quoted by the Daily Express, is reporting that the Gunners are interested in a deal to sign the Morocco international after his impressive performances at the World Cup.
The same article states that Juventus value the experienced centre-half at around €25m (£22m) in the current transfer market, which is a significant amount considering Benatia will turn 32 next April.
According to the same story, the Gunners are interested in a deal for Benatia to bolster their defensive options as Arsenal look to finalise a transfer swoop for Dortmund defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos.
Dortmund, though, will rival Arsenal for the Juventus star’s signature after his participation at the World Cup came to an end after Morocco finished behind Spain, Portugal and Iran.
Benatia would certainly fit the profile of player that new Arsenal boss Unai Emery appears to be targeting after the Gunners signed experienced Switzerland international Stephan Lichtsteiner from Juventus.
The Gunners have also completed a reported £20m deal for Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno to provide Petr Cech and David Ospina with competition for a starting spot.
