Dortmund chief warns Arsenal still haven’t finalised third summer signing
Borussia Dortmund chief Michael Zorc insists Arsenal have finalised a deal for Sokratis Papastathopoulos
Arsenal still haven’t finalised a deal to sign Sokratis Papastathopoulos, according to Borussia Dortmnund sporting director Michael Zorc.
The Gunners have been linked with a move to sign the Greece international over the past few weeks following Unai Emery’s appointment as Arsene Wenger’s replacement.
Arsenal have already signed Switzerland veteran Stephan Lichtsteiner from Juventus on a free transfer, while the Gunners have also snapped up Germany shot stopper Bern Leno from Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen.
The north London side were rumoured to have already agreed a deal to sign Dortmund defender Sokratis but Arsenal were waiting until 1 July to confirm the Greek defender as their third summer signing.
However, Borussia Dortmund director Zorc insisted that Arsenal still haven’t sealed a swoop to sign Papastathopoulos from the German club.
“It tends to go there, that’s right. But things are not completely finalised yet,” Zorc told German outlet Revier Sport.
“And I will not work with you now and talk about the rumour mill, which includes 27 new BVB players since the end of May.
“In the meantime, we are having fun ourselves and planning. We have clear ideas and I am very sure that we will put together a very good team.
“This will not necessarily be the case until the start of the season, because the coach wants to make an impression on the players who are under contract with us.”
Arsenal finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last season to miss out on a Champions League spot for the second successive campaign.
The Gunners haven’t won the Premier League title since 2004 when Arsenal finished the campaign without a defeat.
The north London side lost 3-0 to Premier League champions Manchester City in the League Cup final at Wembley last term.
Arsenal ended up behind Tottenham, Liverpool FC and Chelsea FC in the top-four race.
