Unai Emery warned new Arsenal signing ‘past his best’
Liverpool FC legend Steve Nicol questions why Arsenal signed Stephen Lichtsteiner this summer
Steve Nicol has claimed that new Arsenal signing Stephen Lichtsteiner is past his best.
The Gunners signed the experienced Switzerland international in a free transfer from Serie A giants Juventus earlier this week.
The 34-year-old completed a move to the north London side after his contract expired at the Italian giants following seven seasons in Turin.
Lichtsteiner brings with him a wealth of experience after winning the Serie A titles seven times during a decorated spell at Juventus.
The Switzerland captain has also played for Grasshopper, Ligue 1 side Lille and Serie A outfit Lazio before moving to his fifth club, Arsenal.
Lichtsteiner will compete with Spain international Hector Bellerin for the right-back spot under new Arsenal boss Unai Emery.
Former Liverpool FC defender Nicol isn’t impressed with Arsenal’s decision to sign the veteran Swiss defender in the current transfer window.
Asked whether he was impressed with the signing, Nicol told ESPN FC: “Absolutely 100 per cent not.
“There is a reason why Lichtsteiner hasn’t been starting for Juventus. He is past his best. He is experienced. He could be a leader in the dressing room. He doesn’t make Arsenal better.”
Arsenal finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last season to miss out on a Champions League spot for the second successive season.
The Gunners lost 3-0 to Premier League champions Manchester City in the League Cup final at Wembley back in February.
The north London side signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the January transfer window.
