Pundit lifts the lid on Unai Emery’s Arsenal transfer plans
Craig Burley says new Arsenal manager Unai Emery is going for experience in the summer transfer window
Unai Emery wants to add experience to the Arsenal squad in the summer transfer window, Craig Burley has claimed.
The Gunners signed Switzerland international Stephan Lichtsteiner in a free transfer from Serie A champions Juventus on Tuesday evening.
The 34-year-old won the Serie A title seven times and four Coppa Italia crowns during his seven-season stay at the Turin club.
Arsenal have also been linked with a swoop to Belgium international Marouane Fellaini on a free transfer from Manchester United in the current transfer window.
The Gunners are rumoured to be closing in on a deal to sign Borussia Dortmund’s 29-year-old Greece international Sokratis Papastathopoulos.
The north London side finished in sixth place in the Premier League table and without silverware to prompt Arsene Wenger to call time on his 22 seasons in charge.
New Arsenal manager Unai Emery will be tasked with leading the Gunners to a top-four finish for the first time since 2015-16.
Former Chelsea FC defender Burley believes the Spanish head coach is looking to add experience to his Arsenal squad this summer.
“He is going for experience: Fellaini, Sokratis and Lichtstener,” Burley told ESPN FC. “He is trying to for safe hands to get you some instant results rather than plan for the future.”
Arsenal haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04 when the Gunners finished the season unbeaten thanks to the performances of Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira and the rest of the squad.
