Steve Nicol runs the rule over Arsenal signings under Unai Emery
The Liverpool FC legend explains what Arsenal boss Unai Emery is targeting in the summer transfer window
Steve Nicol has warned Unai Emery that Arsenal aren’t targeting the calibre of player capable of firing them to a top-four finish next term.
The Gunners finished in sixth spot in the Premier League last season to miss out on a Champions League spot for the second successive campaign.
The north London side have regressed over the past decade or so culminating in Arsene Wenger’s exit at the end of the 2017-18 season.
Arsenal signed 34-year-old Switzerland international Stephan Lichtsteiner in a free transfer from Serie A giants Juventus last week.
The Gunners are being linked with a potential swoop to bring in controversial Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini.
Borussia Dortmund defender Sokratis is another name linked with the Gunners despite the 29-year-old’s patchy form in the Bundesliga.
Former Liverpool FC defender Nicol isn’t impressed with the Gunners’ signing and their list of targets so far this summer.
“These signings won’t get Arsenal into the top four,” Nicol told ESPN FC.
The Gunners struggled defensively throughout the 2017-18 season after Arsenal conceded 54 times in 38 games in the Premier League.
Arsenal haven’t won the Champions League in their history after a 2-1 loss to FC Barcelona in the final in Paris in 2006.
