Incoming Chelsea FC boss wants to make Belgium star his first signing – report
Maurizio Sarri wants to bring in Dries Mertens if he is appointed as Chelsea FC's new manager, say reports
Maurizio Sarri wants to sign Dries Mertens for Chelsea FC once he is appointed as the west London club’s new manager, according to reports in the British media.
The Daily Telegraph, as quoted by Metro, is reporting that Chelsea FC are closing in on a deal to appoint Sarri as their new manager, with Antonio Conte set to leave Stamford Bridge after two years.
According to the same story, Italian manager Sarri has told close friends that he wants to try and bring 31-year-old Belgium international to the club as one of his first signings if he is indeed appointed at Stamford Bridge.
The same story says that Conte has been keen on a move for Mertens in the last two transfer windows, but he was deemed to be too old and expensive by Chelsea FC.
Chelsea FC will be looking to at least break back into the top four next season after the west London club finished in fifth place in the Premier League last term and missed out on Champions League qualification.
The Blues did manage to end last season on a positive note by beating Manchester United 1-0 in the FA Cup final thanks to Eden Hazard’s goal at Wembley back in May.
