Chelsea FC face competition from La Liga club for proven Spanish defender – report
Chelsea FC are facing competition from Villarreal to sign Raul Albiol this summer, according to a report
Chelsea FC will have to see off competition from Villarreal to sign Raul Albiol from Napoli this summer, according to a report in Italy.
Spanish media outlet AS, as quoted by talkSPORT, is reporting that Villarreal have entered the race to sign the Spain international in the current transfer window.
The same article states that Albiol has a very reasonable £5.2m contract release clause with the Serie A runners up.
According to the same story, Chelsea FC have been monitoring the 32-year-old’s situation at Napoli as the Blues look to improve their defensive options.
But the former Real Madrid defender is also attracting interest from La Liga side Villarreal in the current transfer window.
Chelsea FC have been heavily linked with a move to appoint Albiol’s former Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri as Antonio Conte’s replacement at the west London side.
Given Sarri’s rumoured imminent appointment at Chelsea FC, the Blues could have the upper hand in the race to sign the Spanish centre-half.
Albiol has won the La Liga crown, the Copa del Rey twice, the Uefa Cup and the Coppa Italia during his club career.
The Napoli defender was also part of the Spain squad that won the World Cup and successive European championship titles.
