Jose Mourinho has his say on David De Gea's performance in Spain's World Cup clash with Portugal
Jose Mourinho has backed David De Gea to recover from his mistake during Spain’s World Cup opener against Portugal on Friday night.
The Spanish shot-stopper was at fault when he allowed Cristiano Ronaldo’s long-range effort into the back of the net just before half-time during their group stage opener.
Ronaldo went on to score a hat-trick for Portugal as he helped them to salvage a point against the Manchester United goalkeeper’s team in Russia.
De Gea has been widely lauded as one of the finest goalkeepers in European football in recent seasons following his sparkling performances for Manchester United under Mourinho.
And the Portuguese manager is backing De Gea to recover from the disappointment of his performance against Portugal on Friday night.
Speaking to Russia Today, Mourinho said: “It’s my boy. It hurts me to say it, but he knows. He knows it’s a bad mistake.
“It’s a mistake that he doesn’t make with us, with United. He was our Player of the Season, fantastic performances. But that happens to the best.
“The good thing with the best is that in the next match he’ll be there, not afraid. Confident to go and ready to help the team. It is a goal with David’s face.”
Meanwhile, Manchester United are believed to be on the lookout for a number of new signings this summer as they bid to try and build a squad capable of winning the Premier League title next season.
The Red Devils have already tied up deals to bring both full-back Diogo Dalot and midfielder Fred to Old Trafford this summer as they look to try and beat Manchester City to the title next term.
