The Reds pulled out of a reported £60m deal to sign Lyon captain Nabil Fekir due to concerns about his medical, according to reports in the British media.
Liverpool FC have been linked with a bid to sign Shaqiri in a £12m deal from Stoke following the Potters’ relegation to the Championship.
Shaqiri has struggled to find consistency in the Premier League despite previous stints at European giants Bayern Munich and Inter Milan.
The 26-year-old scored eight times in 36 games in the Premier League in the 2017-18 season but was unable to help Stoke avoid demotion.
Liverpool FC were thought to be interested in AS Monaco’s France international Thomas Lemar last summer but a deal didn’t materialise.
Sky Sports News reporter O’Connor doesn’t expect the Reds to sign Shaqiri but tipped Liverpool FC to potentially rekindle their interest in Lemar, although he is rumoured to be on his way to Atletico Madrid.
“I was told the Shaqiri deal was unlikely. Another player they could look at is Thomas Lemar,” O’Connor told the Transfer Talk podcast.
“I have been given no indication they will go back in for him.”
Liverpool FC finished in fourth place in the Premier League table and reached the Champions League final in Jurgen Klopp’s second full season in charge.
The Reds have only signed Brazil international Fabinho in a £40m deal from Ligue 1 side AS Monaco this summer.
