Paul Merson names Man United signing who has flopped
The Arsenal legend hasn't been impressed with Victor Lindelof's performances at Manchester United
Paul Merson has delivered a withering verdict on Victor Lindelof after his first season at Manchester United.
The Red Devils signed the Sweden international in a £30m deal from Portuguese side Benfica in the 2017 summer transfer window.
Lindelof was drafted in to improve Jose Mourinho’s options in the middle of the defence following inconsistent performances from Chris Smalling and Phil Jones.
However, the Swedish defender struggled to leave his mark on the Manchester United team to raise questions about his suitability to the Premier League.
Lindelof made 13 starts and a further four substitute appearances in his first season in the Premier League under Jose Mourinho.
The 23-year-old racked up five games in the Champions League, including the first leg of their 2-1 loss to Sevilla in the round of 16.
Mourinho went with Jones and Smalling for Manchester United’s 1-0 loss to Chelsea FC in the FA Cup final at Wembley last month.
Former Arsenal star Merson hasn’t been impressed with Lindelof’s performances at the back.
“The Benfica centre-half. I didn’t see that happening in the first place. I don’t know where that came from,” Merson told Sky Sports.
Manchester United signed Chile international Alexis Sanchez in a swap deal from Arsenal in the January transfer window as Henrikh Mkhitaryan moved in the opposite direction to The Emirates.
The Red Devils finished in second place in the Premier League table.
